Rick and Liam are small-time con artists from the Koreatown section of Los Angeles, who can't seem to catch a break—these low-rent grifters spend much of their time healing from the beatings dished out by disgruntled victims of their scams.
As if the pair’s troubles weren’t serious enough, Rick is addicted to internet pornography. He falls in love with Amethyst, a mysterious web-cam girl he meets online. For his part, Liam has a gambling problem, which centers on a lifelong devotion to the New England Patriots.
When Rick learns his new love has been forced into prostitution by a gang of Russian sex-traffickers, he sets out to save her. To do this, he must betray his longtime partner and steal their life savings, which Liam has just bet on his beloved Patriots.
Things go horribly wrong, and the two friends find themselves scrambling for cash to stave off their leg-breaking Korean bookies. With only three days to raise all the money, the partners—along with Amethyst—hatch a desperate scheme to blackmail a philandering US congressman.
Can they pull off their audacious plan, or will jealousy and suspicion tear them apart? Finally, what is the web-cam girl’s dark secret, and can these two screw-ups survive long enough to learn the terrible truth?
It’s all-in for Rick and Liam—set against the backdrop of the Great Recession, Sweet Money Won is a sexy, funny crime thriller, balancing character-driven suspense with a comic portrait of masculinity in crisis.

Wow! I'm not a fan of crime novels usually, but this one was recommended to me so I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm glad I gave in; this was by far one of the most entertaining novels I've read in a long time. The action starts immediately. Literally in the first paragraph, Magnusson takes us on the run with one of the main characters, Liam. I love a novel that starts off with page turning suspense rather than mindless back stories. When it's interesting from the get-go like Sweet Money Won, it's so much easier to be invested in the characters and the plot overall.
For me, the character of Liam made the novel. I adore the sarcasm that Liam seems to exude at JUST the right moment. I found myself laughing out loud several times at his one liners.
One of my pet peeves is when authors use different nationalities in their novels and write the dialogue in ways that don't work...either too broken or too perfect. Kudos to Magnusson for NOT doing that. When you read the dialogue of the Russian characters, you can actually hear someone from Russia using the speech patterns that he has written in. For example, towards the end of the novel, Svetlana says "Okay we got." It's grammatically incorrect, but it's something that someone who doesn't speak English as their primary language WOULD do. Small details, I know, but its little details like this that show Magnusson is an excellent new author.
So when does the next book come out?

Rick and Liam Sweet Money Won Mycroft Magnusson 9781481952811 Books Reviews
This is one of those odd books where you find yourself rooting for characters who in many other stories would be considered the bad guys. If Rick and Liam ever had moral centers they sold them long ago on eBay and gambled away the profits. These characters shameless glide from one scam to another to hold their barely functional lives together with baling twine, bubble gum and duct tape.
And yet... when one of them starts to win big by gambling on sports you start to get behind him (probably because it's the most legitimate thing he does in the entire book). And when the other gets himself into big trouble by thinking with the wrong organ, it seems entire plausible. The character has been so well defined that his actions seems completely natural -- almost unavoidable.
Getting into big trouble tests Rick and Liam's friendship and measures how much they care about each other. The story gets really intense at the end but that just reflects the gravity of the situation.
Further adventures (or even a prequel of some sort) would be most welcome.
Rick and Liam, the two main protagonists in this tale, are two rather unsuccessful gamblers and grafters that are constantly in danger of being physically assaulted by the victims of their scams. Their characters are well written and so are the numerous underworld figures that they come into contact with such as the Korean and Russian 'mafia' families. This book has a fair amount of violence in it but it is highly entertaining and amusing. I enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to being able to share in more of Rick and Liam's adventures.
This is one of those rare books that completely hooked me from the first page. The introduction literally bursts open with a dramatic, darkly humorous scene in which the protagonist, Liam, flees across back yards, flings himself over fences, and literally runs for his life, all the while being pursued by gun-wielding Russians intent upon killing both Liam and his companion, a U.S. Congressman. And Liam pulls this off barefoot, no less. A good example of the dark humor and the smooth way that Magnusson weaves it into the swirling action, is when Liam untangles the Congressman from a patio set during their life-or-death flight, and yet he cannot stop his mind from drifting lazily away into thinking about advertising slogans.
Although Rick's friendship with Liam, his long-term fellow con-man, is well-written and intense, the relationship most deeply layered is the one between Rick and his wife-to-be. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but her choices - and the results that come of them - are some of the most fascinating aspects of this incredible read.
Unlike the movie industry, very, very few authors can nail down believable "action scenes." Magnusson has a real gift for it, and I hope to read more of his work in the future.
I've had several books recommended to me by friends lately (mostly because the books were written by friends of theirs...) and, as a result, I seem to find myself saying this a lot lately...
This is not the genre of book I would normally read. It is way too violent for my taste. But, having said that, I have to add that it is very well written and, in many parts, delightfully funny. I also was -- much to my surprise -- quite involved in and moved by the relationship between the two protagonists.
Yes, apparently at least two cliches became true for me as I was reading "Rick and Liam Sweet Money Won." I found myself rooting for the heroes and I found myself staying awake late into the night so I could continue to read and find out what happened next.
